Register for a skills assessment

It is important to read the relevant applicant guidelines before proceeding with registration and payment:

Pathway 1

If you do not hold a formal Australian qualification awarded by an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you should register for Pathway 1. You will need to use the Trade Self-Evaluation Tool (TradeSET) to help you identify if you have the relevant skills that meet the Australian standards in your trade. You should save and print a copy of your TradeSET results to include with your skills assessment application.

Pathway 2

If you do hold a formal Australian qualification awarded by an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you should register for Pathway 2. You do not need to use the Trade Self-Evaluation Tool. You will need to demonstrate at least three years full time paid employment in a relevant and directly related trade, including 12 months full time paid employment in the three years before you lodge your application. Evidence of employment undertaken on a part time basis can also be considered and counted toward the employment requirement on a pro rata basis.

Assessment process

The assessment process has three steps.

Step 1 - Documentary assessment

Register for a skills assessment in your relevant occupation. Once we receive your registration we will provide via email the Sydney TAFE Assessment Pack with relevant information and instructions. This pack will include the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) application form and instructions on the required Portfolio of Evidence (PoE).

This will be assessed by a qualified Sydney TAFE expert and if the information and evidence provided is approved you will be eligible to progress to step 2.

Step 2 - Technical interview

If the assessor is satisfied you have the necessary skills and knowledge in your occupation you will be invited to participate in a live and recorded video interview to validate your technical skills and knowledge. You will need access to a computer, tablet, or smart phone, a broadband connection, a webcam and a set of headphones.

Practical skills demonstration
We can provide a practical skills demonstration assessment if required. A price for this service will be provided on an individual basis.

Step 3 - Assessment outcome

If you successfully complete Step 1 and 2 you will receive:

  • A Certificate III or Certificate IV Australian Qualification for a non-licensed trade
  • A Skilled Migration Result.

Should your skill assessment be deemed unsuccessful you are eligible to apply for a reassessment.

Reassessment resulting from an appeal by the applicant

If you wish to appeal our assessment decision you will need to lodge an appeal within 7 business days of being notified of the unsuccessful outcome. Please note no new information may be considered. The fee for this service is AUD $800. Read the reassessment appeal process.

Reassessment resulting from an applicant addressing skills gaps

If our assessment decision deemed you unsuccessful, you are entitled to address the skills gaps and have a period of 12 months from unsuccessful notification to apply for a reassessment. During this period you may undertake training to address the skills gaps. The fee for this service is AUD $800. Read the skills gaps reassessment process.
