Student services for SITEC students

Sydney TAFE offers international students a range of support services.

Accommodation, airport pickup and guardianship

Our Admission Officers can arrange airport pickup and guardianship services through an approved registered homestay company. If you prefer, you can contact a homestay company directly, or you can choose to use a different service provider.

A homestay company can provide:

  • Homestay accommodation with Australian families. This includes accommodation, meals, use of household facilities and the opportunity to practice English with your host family
  • Guardianship with homestay for students under 18 years of age. All students under 18 years of age must have an approved guardian*
  • Airport pick-up and transfer from Sydney Airport to homestays or other accommodation.

The Sydney TAFE English Centre (SITEC) does not charge a fee for arranging these services, however, the homestay company will charge a fee. You will be a customer of the homestay company and they will contact you directly to confirm any arrangements or questions.

*For students under 18 years old, parents must nominate a guardian who will be responsible for them while in Australia. If you do not have relatives in Sydney our Cnetre can help arrange a guardian and homestay with Australian households through the Australian Homestay Network.

Academic and personal counselling

Our academic and personal counsellors are available to support you during your time at SITEC.

Academic counselling

Our academic staff are very experienced in helping international students and understand their needs and issues. We have bilingual staff members and access to interpreting services if necessary.

On your first day at SITEC, our academic counsellors will assess your study needs and work out your general Study Plan. During your study, your teacher will be continuously monitoring your progress – you can ask your teacher any questions about your study or welfare. The teachers will either help you or refer you to somebody who can answer your questions.

Several times a week, there is a teacher available for one hour before or after classes to help students with self-study or any other study-related questions. You can also speak with SITEC academic coordinators, the Education Officer or the Director of Studies during the breaks, before or after classes.

Personal counselling

As an international student at SITEC you have access to TAFE Counsellors who can help you deal with any personal or psychological problems which may affect your study. Our counsellors can provide advice or referral to other support services.

Our counsellors also run a range of classes and workshops covering areas such as study skills, communication, career options and stress management.

The Counselling Unit is generally open from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday. Evening appointments are also available.

Campus security

There are professionally trained security officers on campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Security officers are experienced in helping students, including international students with limited English; they are also certified in First Aid.

Childcare, prayer rooms and other facilities

As a SITEC student you may access a range of other Sydney Institute services and facilities at our Ultimo campus, including:

  • Book shop
  • Child care
  • Multi-faith prayer rooms
  • Student Association
  • International students' lounge
  • SITEC students' lounge.

Employment service

Careers Connect is a free online job vacancy, job finding and preparation and careers information service for all Sydney Institute students and graduates.

If you are a full-time SITEC student you have access to a range of on-campus and online Sydney TAFE library services. Ultimo College, where SITEC is located, has the largest library, with an impressive collection of resources and free access to online databases. You can use the libraries at all Sydney TAFE campuses.
There are dedicated sections at the library for most of the English language courses: students can access additional materials and practice what they studied in class, do serious research or get some fun language practice.
Our friendly librarians have instructions and tours for students with low-level English.

SITEC student lunch rooms

Sydney TAFE English Language Centre has a number of student lunch rooms exclusively for SITEC and other international students. In the International Student lounge you will find hot and cold water, fridges and microwaves, where you can keep and prepare snacks and lunches.

Ultimo College canteen and cafés

There are two cafés and a reasonably-priced student canteen on campus. Make sure you get your concession stamp from the Student Association on your student card for further discounts. The canteen serves European and Asian style food, so if you only have a few minutes, you can always grab something to eat or drink very quickly.

The Apprentice

Students and staff are welcome to dine at our training restaurant, The Apprentice, where meals are prepared and served by our hospitality students. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on set dates during term time. Visit The Apprentice to make a reservation.

Off campus

If you want more variety and have a little more time, there are plenty of inexpensive eateries in Broadway, Haymarket and Chinatown, within 5 minutes walk of the college.
