School leaver

You can choose from more than 600 courses at Sydney TAFE. Our seven vibrant campuses are located in the centre of Sydney and surrounding suburbs.

Course entry is not based on your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). But exactly what’s available depends on your age and what level of schooling you’ve completed.

Whatever your goal, our staff are dedicated to helping you develop real skills, leading to endless possibilities.

Under 17 and wanting to leave school?

If you’re under 17 and want to leave school, you must complete Year 10 and then continue in either full-time education, training, paid employment or combinations of these until you’re at least 17.

Once you’ve completed Year 10 you can:

  • Stay at school to complete Years 11 and 12
  • Do a full-time course at Sydney TAFE or another Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
  • Get a full-time job
  • Take up an apprenticeship or traineeship
  • Do a combination of work and study to make a full-time workload.

In exceptional circumstances you may be able to study a course equivalent to Year 10 at TAFE NSW (your principal must approve this).

17 or over but not completed your HSC?

If you’re over 17 and are leaving school, but haven’t completed the Higher School Certificate (HSC), you can do:

  • A full-time or part-time course to provide you with the skills and qualifications employers want
  • An apprenticeship or traineeship, combining formal studies with work and on-the-job training
  • A pre-apprenticeship to help you gain an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Completed your HSC?

If you’ve completed or are about to complete your HSC, you can do:

  • A full-time or part-time course to give you the skills and qualifications employers want
  • A Diploma or Advanced Diploma course, which may provide credit towards a uni course
  • An apprenticeship or traineeship, combining formal studies with work and on-the-job training
  • A pre-apprenticeship, to develop your employability skills.

Remember you can gain recognition of prior learning through TVET, other HSC studies and employment. That is, if you start a Sydney TAFE course you may not have to repeat some units you’ve already done at school.
