Apprenticeships and traineeships combine on and off the job training with paid employment so you earn a wage while also working towards a nationally recognised qualification.
Sydney TAFE also offers school-based apprenticeships and traineeships for high school students as part of TVET.
An apprentice is trained in a skilled trade. On completion, you will become a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeships usually take 3-4 years and can be undertaken part-time, full-time or even while you’re still at school.
When you take up a traineeship, you learn on the job while you study at Sydney TAFE. Traineeships take 1-2 years to complete and you’ll receive a nationally accredited certificate on successful completion.
Traineeships are available in a range business and industry sectors and most vocational areas not covered by apprenticeships.
To be eligible for government-subsidised training as an apprentice or trainee you must:
- be an Australian citizen, or a permanent resident, or humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen
- be 15 years or older
- live or work in NSW
- no longer be at school (except for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships)
- have found an employer who will take you on as an apprentice or trainee.
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships offered as part of TVET allow high school students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while still at school.
A minimum of one day a week is spent on the job with an employer, plus a portion of the school holidays. For the rest of the school week, students complete the Sydney TAFE component of their training as well as their other HSC subjects.
School-based apprentices can start full-time employment as a second year apprentice after completing Year 12.
School-based trainees complete their formal or off-the job traineeship training by the end of Year 12.
Trade Support Loans are loans for apprentices paid in instalments totalling up to $20,000 during an Australian apprenticeship. These loans are to assist you meet the costs of living and learning while you undertake your trade, and you receive a 20% discount off your loan when you complete your apprenticeship
