    Course description and aims

    This course is designed to help you enter and maintain a career in the
    manufacturing industry. The course supports the Certificate III in Manufacturing
    Technology, specialising in CAD/Drafting. You will learn how to use and apply
    CAD/Drafting skills to assist in the design and making of manufactured products.

    A career option in Drafting and Design covers both Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)
    and traditional drafting principles as well as electives in information
    technology and manufacturing processes and operations. On finishing, you could
    be employed in a range of roles such as a CAD operator and/or detailed
    draftsperson.

    This Certificate III course has been registered as a Technology Cadetship that
    should be completed over a one (1) year period. The Technology Cadetship allows
    you to be employed and to undertake training at TAFE NSW while you learn on the
    job.

    After completing this course there are a number of Technology career
    opportunities and pathways available to reflect the diverse skills needed in the
    manufacturing enterprises. For more information contact your local TAFE College.

    The ten (10) units required to achieve in the Certificate III qualification are
    recognised and given full recognition towards completion of the fifteen (15)
    units required for the Certificate IV in Manufacturing Technology (CAD/Drafting)
    qualification.

    Course outcomes and careers

    This Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology specialises in the use and
    application of CAD/Drafting skills to assist in the design and making of
    manufactured products.

    Recommended Pathways

    Students may enter this course directly. They would normally be expected to be
    in relevant employment. They may proceed to higher level qualifications within
    the Manufacturing Training Package MSA07 as explained in Section 7.1. They may
    also move into training packages specific to particular manufacturing sectors.

    If students have undertaken this qualification with the support of their
    employer it would be expected that they would be employed in positions at AQF3
    in the workplace.

    There are a range of career opportunities available to reflect the diverse
    skills needed in manufacturing enterprises.

    CAD / Drafting covers both Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and traditional
    drafting principles as well as electives in information technology and
    manufacturing processes and operations. On finishing, cadets could be
    employed in a range of roles such as CAD operator or detail draftsperson.

    Articulation

    Students who complete the Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology,
    specialising in CAD/Drafting, can apply to enrol in the Certificate IV in
    Manufacturing Technology (CAD/Drafting).

    Students may then apply to enrol in the Diploma or Advanced Diploma and gain
    credit for any units achieved, provided they are valid in the qualifications you
    choose.

    Expected Outcomes

    Successful completion of this course will provide students with the competencies
    to develop and implement technical manufacturing techniques and obtain
    employment as a draftsperson or supervisor in a manufacturing technology
    enterprise.

    More specifically, the course aims to provide students with skills and knowledge
    to:
    - Use computer aided drafting systems to produce basic engineering drawings
    - Use CAD to create and display 3D models
    - Produce detailed engineering drawings
    - Produce basic engineering graphics
    - Assist in the preparation of a basic workplace layout
    - Interpret technical drawing
    - Organise and communicate information

    If students have undertaken this qualification with the support of their
    employer it would be expected that they would be employed in technical
    positions at AQF level III in the workplace.

    On 1 January 2012 the Work Health Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) was implemented in
    NSW. Delivery and assessment of this course must be based on this legislation.

    Work Health and Safety (WHS) was referred to in NSW as Occupational Health and
    Safety (OHS) and in some countries people know it as Occupational Safety and
    Health (OSH). Please refer to the Work Health and Safety heading in Section B
    6.1 Delivery Modes for more information.

    TAFE NSW trainers and assessors must meet the requirements specified in the
    Standards for NVR Registered Training Organisations 2011: Part 2 SNR 4 & Part 3,
    SNR 15.

    There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

    Note:
    The minimum requirements for the Certificate III in Manufacturing Technology can
    also be met by holders of the Certificate III in Engineering - Technician from
    the Metal and Engineering Training Package.
