    Course description and aims

    This qualification reflects the role of massage therapists who provide general health maintenance treatments. It does not reflect the role of a remedial massage therapist. Practitioners may be self-employed or work within a larger health service.

    To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

    No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

    ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
    If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

    WORK PLACEMENTS

    Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

    1. NSW HEALTH

    Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
    • Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
    • Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
    • Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

    3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENÂ’S SERVICES

    Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of ChildrenÂ’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes.     4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties.     Tuesday 30 January 2018, at 1:00pm at Sutherland College, Loftus Campus Rawson Avenue, building F, level G, room FG.33.

    Indicative timetable:

    You will need to attend approximately 20 hours of class a week over 3 days plus 3.5 hours per week of clinical practice. An indication of how your weekly timetable may look is: Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00am -5:00pm plus clinics

    Wednesday 6 December 2017 from 10:30am to 12:30pm at Randwick Campus, cnr King Street and Darley Road, Randwick, Building B, Level 1, Room 26 (B1.26).

    A second information session will be held on Wednesday 07 February 2018 from 9:30am to 11:30am at Randwick College cnr King Street & Darley Road, Randwick, Building B, Level 1, Room 26 (B1.26) where you will be given specific timetable and course assessment information. It is important that you try to attend this session.

    Indicative timetable:

    You will need to attend approximately 16 hours of class a week over 3 days plus 4 hours per week of clinical practice. The clinic operates Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and all day Thursday from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

    You need to complete 80 hours of clinical practice (supervised clinic) over the duration of the course and you can choose the clinical practice days you wish to attend.
