    Course description and aims

    This qualification reflects the role of early childhood educators who are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum in early childhood education and care services. In doing so they work to implement an approved learning framework within the requirements of the Education and Care Services National Regulations and the National Quality Standard.
    They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other staff.

    Under the Education and Care Services National Law (2011) the Australian Childrens Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) publishes lists of approved early childhood education and care qualifications and information regarding regulatory requirements here: www.acecqa.gov.au.

    ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY
    If you are seeking to enrol in a First Aid unit of competency you are advised that to complete the unit you must be able to perform basic life support skills, for example control bleeding and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you have a disability that would prevent you from performing required basic life support skills you are advised that you will not be able to achieve the unit of competency.

    WORK PLACEMENTS

    Many TAFE courses have a compulsory work placement component to assist you to apply your learning in a practical environment and you may be required to comply with some (or all) of the following.

    1. NSW HEALTH

    Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to
    • Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements;
    • Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health;
    • Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card.

    3. COMMUNITY AND CHILDRENÂ’S SERVICES

    Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free) in line with the Office of ChildrenÂ’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes.     4. STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties.     Additional days will be required to undertake the training of the First Aid Certificate, Work placement and any other workshops. Work placement is compulsory. Each semester it is made up of single days and 2 additional block weeks. Attendance is for an 8 hr shift 5 days in a week. (shifts may be starting any time after 7 am and finish at 6 pm) The Diploma requires a minimum of 240 hours to be completed in an approved Early Childhood Education & Care Service. This is arranged by TAFE.

    This course runs over 6 semesters with Classes running for 15 weeks over 2 to 3 days per week per semester between the hours of 9:00am to 3:30pm.

    Additional days will be required to undertake the training of the First Aid Certificate plus compulsory Workplacement block weeks. Students will be advised when these additional days will occur.
    Additional Workplacement occur each semester prior to the compulsory Workplacement Weekly Blocks of 8 hour per day per 5 day week. Overall the Diploma requires a total of 240 hours in a range of approved Early Childhood Education & Care Services. Workplacement is arranged by Loftus TAFE.

    This course runs over 6 semesters with Classes running for 15 weeks over 2 to 3 days per week per semester between the hours of 9:00am to 3:30pm.

    Additional days will be required to undertake the training of the First Aid Certificate plus compulsory Workplacement block weeks. Students will be advised when these additional days will occur.
    Additional Workplacement occur each semester prior to the compulsory Workplacement Weekly Blocks of 8 hour per day per 5 day week. Overall the Diploma requires a total of 240 hours in a range of approved Early Childhood Education & Care Services. Workplacement is arranged by Loftus TAFE.

    As a 'Flexible Learning' student your studying and training will be a combination of Study Booklets referred to as 'Learner Guides', additional Unit Readings on-line via a MOODLE computer program and regular attendance in an approved 'Early Childhood Service' to build on your knowledge and skills towards assessment. This engagement with a Children's Service is negotiated with you and organised by your tutor. You will also be assigned a Tutor and offered a 1 to 1-1/2 hour evening appointments on a 3 weekly basis. You can attend 6 appointments per semester. To complete the Diploma, you are required to undertake a minimum of 240 hours of workplacement over the period of your enrolment in an approved 'Early Childhood Education & Care Service. This is arranged by TAFE. If you already are working in a Children's Service your Workplacement requirement may occur in your workplace subject to your employer's approval.
