Course description and aims
This course provides an introduction to handbuilding techniques such as coiling,
moulding and slab building - while developing your visual design ideas and
decoration techniques. Participants will learn historical and contemporary
methods to glaze, decorate and fire their works. We support and encourage
students to develop their own ability and language in clay.
You will learn about:
- setting up for handbuilding - tools, selecting the right type of clay
- basic techniques - coiling, moulding and slab building
- introductory decoration techniques - working with slip, underglaze and glaze
- basic technology - introductory information about glaze and how to fire a

Attend the following information session to meet with the teaching staff, discuss the course and get more information about enrolment and next steps.
Tuesday 4 April 2017 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Sutherland College, Gymea Campus, Cnr The Kingsway & Hotham Road, Building A, Lower Ground Floor, Ceramics Studio 1.
You will need to attend approximately 3.5 hours of class over 1 day per week for 8 weeks. An indication of how your weekly timetable may look is: Friday, 10:00am to 1:30pm

A Basic Ceramic Tool Kit will be required to successfully complete this course and will cost approximately $15. If you go on to further study you may decide to extend this tool kit with extra paint brushes, tools and specialist paints.
