Why Sydney TAFE courses are better

All Sydney TAFE teachers have worked in the industry for at least five years and many are still active in the industry or work closely with industry bodies.

Not only do our teachers know the latest industry standards and practices, they know employers in the industry. The networks you make with the help of your teachers at Sydney TAFE can set you up for a great floristry career.

Providing the foundations

Wendy Delve has been teaching floristry for more than 15 years. She believes her role as a teacher is to facilitate the basics by providing students with good construction techniques and a good grounding in the elements and principals of design.

“What they (the students) do with that knowledge is up to them,” Wendy says.  “We give them the tools so they can go and create.”

Real world learning

As part of your training, you’ll be given real-life floristry and retail experience working in our on-site florist shop, The Ultimate Florist. You’ll also be given the opportunity to showcase your work at annual events such as the Sydney Royal Easter Show, the Sydney TAFE Awards night and the annual Flower Growers’ Ball.

Involvement in real-world events makes training fun, helps build confidence and gives you the chance to make useful contacts with others in your own and related industry areas.

Real training for the real workplace

Sydney TAFE offers students purpose built classrooms, with individual stainless steel benches, deep sink areas and fantastic natural light. We have the latest embellishments on-hand to enhance floral arrangements and create amazing displays.

We have a specific photographic area which has been set up for you to take quality photographs to use in your portfolios, and we have our own display window for students to use to practise setting up window displays and learn how to merchandise your floral designs.

Encouraging blossoming talent

Sydney TAFE’s floristry students are encouraged to enter annual industry competitions held by the Sydney Flower Growers Market, Wildflowers NSW and World Skills (for students under 21 years of age).

Entering real competitions gives you the chance to have your talent recognised by industry experts – something that looks great on a CV and could just give you the edge in future job interviews. You could even win a scholarship worth $2,000 to help you take your floristry studies to the next level.
